This qualitative study set out to investigate the ways students respond to multicultural literature that reflects their own culture. The study also sought to explore how student conversations change based on exposure to multicultural texts. The study was conducted in a dual immersion (Spanish-English) contained classroom of 19 students. Most participants were part of a minoritized group. Data were collected through the researcher's reflective journaling, whole-class and small-group discussions. Data were collected for 2 weeks, and students were introduced to three multicultural books. Thematic analysis was used to examine the data. Four themes were identified through the data analysis: 1. Cultural Awareness, 2. Student Identity, 3. Student Engagement, and 4. Reading Motivation. The findings suggest that students respond to multicultural texts that reflect their own culture by participating in whole group and small group discussions, listening attentively, showing more interest in reading, establishing connections to the texts, and affirming their identities. The data collected in this study correlate to the existing literature on multicultural texts and student engagement. Classroom teachers can use this study to inform their teaching practice and better understand multicultural literature and its influence on students.
