This project addresses the cultish practice of sleep deprivation and the other ethical concerns stemming from capitalism in the workplace. It challenges the safety and efficacy of the modern 24/7 work environment, which demands "a non-social model of machine performance" and erases the distinction between work and non-work time. In a capitalist system, work is often structured into grids of cubicles and regulated by strict routines, which can create an impersonal and indifferent environment that undermines the importance of individuality and the potential for personal growth in the workplace. This project proposes an alternative workplace that values mood and atmosphere to promote spiritual well-being. In this utopian workspace, people do not adhere to the strict routines dictated by mechanical time but instead follow the principles of "body time" as described in Einstein's Dreams. This means they work, eat, and rest based on their moods and desires rather than on a rigid schedule. To create this "body time" workspace, we need to rethink the spatial strategies of the traditional working environment and create a space that invites people into a world of embodied experiences that enhance their sense of self, balance, and integration in a way that transcends "rationality and logic."The site selected to realize this utopian concept of a "placeless place" focused on body clocks is Pier 57 in New York City's Hudson River. This location is ideal for several reasons. Firstly, the site's historical role aligns with the principles of utopias and heterotopias. In the 1950s, the pier served as a shipping terminal, a "floating piece of space" that was both self-contained and connected to the infinite sea. This dual nature of the structure has made it both an economic tool and a source of imagination, making it an ideal location to host the utopian world of body time. Secondly, being surrounded by the Hudson River, Little Island and the High Line, the site is highly exposed to natural environment, which can help improve workers' health and cognitive performance by aligning with their body's natural circadian rhythms. Thirdly, the site is constructed out of a Cartesian grid, which is reminiscent of the mechanical time construction of buildings that "promoted constancy, repetition and standardization," and could be seen as a contrast to the new body time insertions this thesis is about to lay out.
