Two avant-garde, under-appreciated works, Luigi Nono's ...sofferte onde serene... and Iannis Xenakis' Ais, are linked by a common element: the notion and experience of death as the central theme. They present fundamental idiomatic and stylistic transformations that create new musical styles and aesthetics. By drawing from other disciplines, such as neuroscience, philosophy and psychology, and in combination with musical analysis, the thesis attempts to explore factors that contribute to a phenomenon that creates immediacy between the work and the listener, and provides valuable insight into the process of creation and its fundamental truths. It attempts to unravel notions of intuition and reason, and of science and urge in music, through an existential perspective that criticizes the post-World war II mentality to assert imposed control of the structural aspects of musical composition.
