Online learning is a vehicle for delivering quality education and has become even more attractive due to the low cost to deliver online education and because of the convenience, flexibility, and availability that online learning offers. Online learning is even more attractive to students who are considered non-traditional students who may be older, working full time, and going to school part-time. Many non-traditional learners appreciate the freedom that online learning environments offer and have returned to school for a variety of reasons. As a result, online education and related programs should be aware of the different needs, cultures, and concerns that non-traditional students bring when participating in an online program of study. Emotion plays a critical role in the construction of meaning and knowledge of the self in the adult learning process. Online learning, without the proper tools for engagement, can be an isolating experience and there is a need for further research to understand the emotional needs of adult, online learners to reduce the rates of attrition and to also increase student engagement and overall academic success. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to understand the emotional needs of nontraditional students in an online graduate program. Much of the literature pointed out key issues in online learning which were related to the high rates of attrition and the inability to meet the needs of online students. Lacking is more specific research that identifies successful strategies that would help meet the emotional needs of online students, especially related to the feelings of isolation often experienced by students participating in an online learning environment. The results of this study lead to the identification of key themes that provided a better understanding of the overall emotional experiences of online graduate students at the studied university, the specific emotions they are feeling, how those emotions have affected their learning, what university program staff and faculty can do to better meet their emotional needs, and their overall feelings about the current technologies being used in the program.
