This is a qualitative case study in museum education. Its purpose was to analyze problems with school programs at art museums, and as a response to that analysis, propose a new approach in museum programming. A Staff Developement Program was researched, designed, and implemented in a field setting. The program served as a vehicle by which school and museum staff could be trained and supported as they developed and implemented an interdisciplinary, multiple-visit museum program. The goal of the research project was to discover if the components of the staff development program proved to be an effective means of providing the training and support necessary to bring the participants together as a working, productive team. Subjects included museum volunteer guides (docents), classroom teachers, and a museum art instructor. The Staff Development Program was developed from theories on developmental adult learning, aspects of effective instruction in adult education, and principles of supervision. The program was comprised of five components: (1) Needs Assessment, (2) Organizational Development, (3) Developing a Sequence of Learning Experiences, (4) Consultation, (5) Communication and Coordination. The desired outcomes included: (1) success in meeting the goals and objectives of both museum and school staff, (2) evidence of newly acquired knowledge and skills on the part of teachers and museum staff, (3) application of these skills to independently created projects, (4) change with respect to personal development and attitudes concerning art in the classroom, museums as an educational resource, and educational approaches used in the museum. The findings revealed that, as a whole, the Staff Development Program was effective in developing and coordinating the efforts of museum and school staff. Docents voiced minor objections that they would have preferred a more highly structured means of support.
