In this study, existing patterns of cooperation between museum education departments and schools of education in colleges and universities were examined in order to delineate the role of inter-institutional cooperation in preparing teachers to utilize the museum as an educational resource. The first phase of the study involved a status survey of schools of education and museum education department in 100 metropolitan areas in the United States. The second phase of the study incorporated eleven on-site case studies of museum education departments and schools of education in five metropolitan areas. Various data gathering procedures were utilized during the case study investigation. From the collection of data, it may be concluded that museums provide a variety of resources that can be utilized by undergraduate and graduate education majors as well as teachers. Awareness of these resources, along with developing strategies for integrating them with school curriculum is often an undeveloped area. Less than 25% of the museum respondents indicated that staff members cooperatively taught classes with faculty from schools of education. The fact that so few cooperative programs are in existence reinforces the conclusion that in actuality there are few on-going thrusts in the area of museum/schools of education cooperation. Responses from both sets of questionnaires as well as on-site study indicated that: utilizing the museum as an educational resource should be included in both undergraduate and graduate education courses; development of such courses should be a cooperative effort between museum educators and school of education faculty and there should formal as well as informal exchanges in educational strategies for preparing teachers to use the museum.
