Did popular music grow more syncopated over the 20th century? Syncopation has received growing attention in recent studies of popular music-particularly in studies of music from the second half of the century-but the evolution of syncopation over the century as a whole remains unexplored. This project introduces a new musical corpus that was designed to address this gap. Chapter 1 defines various types of syncopation and the associated types of accent that give rise to them, and provides a framework for comparing the strength of one syncopation to the strength of another. This framework serves as the basis for several predictions of syncopation growth. The predictions are evaluated in Chapter 3 using the corpus, which is introduced in Chapter 2. Chapter 4 considers syncopation and its relationship to form, expectation, and complexity, and Chapter 5 explores directions for future work on syncopation in popular music.
