While scholarship regarding Black artistry is growing in the realm of Western art music, the integration and representation of the artistry remains to be of less importance in the main curriculum of the modern music student, especially in the subject of music composition. This research aims to discuss the musicality and creativity behind select examples of hip hop music with the goal to present the genre as musically-stimulating and worth discussion at higher levels. This musical creativity is illustrated through the technique of sampling, and demonstrates how hip hop artists approach the ideas of borrowing sounds, make reference to figures in Black history, and give insight into the lives and perspectives of Blacks in urban America. While my own experience with hip hop has always been from a casual listening standpoint, this research reveals that hip hop artists and producers make conscious decisions to sonically borrow and repurpose sounds for reasons that often reflect their own musical perspectives and provide a sense of community that connects hip hop artists to their past.In addition to this paper, I composed a series of three works that explore the ideas of borrowing and repurposing, inspired by the techniques of sampling and remixing in hip hop music. The first work, "impressions of blooming flowers", is scored for five instruments and establishes the main ideas and gestures for the overall series. The subsequent works, "impressions of faded mountains" and "impressions of seven stars", expand upon and rework the musical materials from the first piece in subtle and dramatic ways, creating three pieces that are unique as their own musical experiences while remaining interconnected through their history.
