This study aimed to explore the experiences of psychiatric symptoms and highlight the preferences in treatment provider of Hmong individuals. Variables that impact the mental health concerns of this community are also discussed. This study utilized a quantitative design to determine experiences of psychiatric symptoms with 50 participants (Mental health diagnosis (MHdx) n = 29, No mental health diagnosis (NoMH) n = 21). The sample utilized two platforms (online and in person) for completion of measures. Psychiatric symptoms were assessed utilizing the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and the Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5 (PC-PTSD-5), with comparisons made to other research samples. Demographic information and inquiries regarding mental health were also collected. Findings suggest no significant difference between a contrasting MHdx sample on the PHQ-9 and GAD-7. There was a significant difference in depressive experiences between the NoMH sample and its comparison. Furthermore, this sample appeared to experience a higher percentage of PTSD symptoms compared to the sample in Perrin et al. (2014). Participants were more likely to seek mental health treatment from support individuals or other providers as opposed to a mental health provider. Given their mental health concerns, Hmong individuals should be a target for mental health treatment with consideration given to factors that impact mental illness and provider preference. Hmong participants in this sample were open to discussing their mental health stressors and concerns. Important factors to consider when working with this population include limited literacy, cultural sensitivity and humility, patience, openness to metaphors and analogies, and their conceptualization of mental illness.
