Religion and spirituality (R/S) has a limited but important role in genetic counseling practice. For those receiving genetic counseling, religion and spirituality can serve as a heuristic and as a shaper of one's worldview in the face of uncertainty and illness. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding the role of R/S in genetic counseling. This thesis explores the role of R/S in genetic counseling practices through both the views of individual genetic counselors and through addressing their views on their practice including R/S within the institutions in which they work.. Through qualitative interviews with 13 genetic counselors about the role of religion and spirituality in their practices, I found that while R/S does not come up consistently, it does arise. As well, training surrounding R/S in genetic counseling is lacking and inconsistent. Overall, religion/spirituality is a blind spot in the practice of genetic counseling operating as a tacit, informal, and varied phenomenon. However, it is one that can shape both practitioners' and clients' decision making and ability to make sense of genetic information in genetic counseling. Therefore R/S in genetic counseling practice deserves more resources, continued education, and research attention in the future to explore its limited role and utility.

520 $a La religion et la spiritualite (R/S) occupent un role limite mais important dans la pratique de consultation genetique. Pour ceux qui recoivent des soins en consultation genetique, la religion et la spiritualite peuvent agir comme outil heuristique et servir a guider leur vision du monde face a l'incertitude et a la maladie. Cependant, il n'y a point de consensus lorsque nous examinons le role joue par la R/S dans la consultation genetique. Cette these explore le role de la R/S dans la pratique de consultation genetique aux niveaux institutionnel et personnel. Par le biais de treize entrevues qualitatives conduites aupres de consultants genetiques concernant le role de la religion et de la spiritualite dans leur pratique professionnelle, j'en suis arrivee a la conclusion que meme si la R/S n'est pas soulevee systematiquement, elle est parfois abordee. Par contre, la formation sur le sujet est manquante et incoherente en consultation genetique. Globalement, la R/S est consideree comme un angle mort dans la pratique de consultation genetique puisqu'elle opere de maniere informelle, tacite et qu'elle est un phenomene diversifie pouvant influencer les decisions des professionnels et des clients. Malgre tout, elle peut avoir un impact sur les decisions et la capacite a accorder un sens a l'information donnee en consultation genetique, tant pour les praticiens que pour les clients. Par consequent, la R/S dans la pratique de consultation genetique merite plus de ressources, de formation continue, et d'etre l'objet de futurs projets de recherches afin d'explorer son role limite et son utilite.
