The universal ticking of the clock was at first an enlightening invention that introduced mankind to the world of quantifiable efficiency, but it has now become a stricture that often presents anxiety and limitations for many of us. We evaluate our quality of life based on the number of hours we sleep, what time we wake up, how long we live, and how young we look. With the recent surge of online working and socializing platforms, people seem to be losing track of time and have trouble focusing on their work, and this vicious cycle of distraction and the realization of distraction creates much anxiety. As we move on to a lifestyle based on a system of carefully and deliberately designed timescapes, we seem to be failing to savor time. Instead of concentrating on the task at hand, we are often concerned with productivity based on the mechanical concept of time: in hours, minutes, seconds, and even microseconds. As time becomes increasingly measurable and trackable, it is being used as an oppressive construct rather than something to be experienced and enjoyed. Since this sense of time was first developed as a unit of measurement, it desensitizes us and fails to capture some qualities of time that are not quantifiable. With technological advancements and unified expressions of time, we tend to miss out on the subtle languages of moments, bodies, and mind. Universal time directs our attention to the question of 'how much' instead of 'how' we spend our time. By examining time in scientific terms, cultural expressions, and historical and religious contexts, my thesis aims to propose alternative ways of perceiving, understanding, and experiencing time. Through personifying, radicalizing, fixing, and visualizing time, I would like to uncover new forms and insights that will help individuals and communities to experience life more fully and break the desensitizing effects of the mechanical sense of time. Both physical and digital design objects will be used to help people completely immerse themselves in life, to the point of being almost completely oblivious of time. Also, by exploring and experimenting with the concept of erosion and decay, I want to discover poetic visual design elements that offer new, non-quantitative ways of tracking and registering time.
