Instructional designers need project management skills when managing instructional design projects (Liu et al., 2002). Based on a 2018 study, project management knowledge was found in over 40% of job postings and is recognized as a competency needed for career preparedness (Klein & Kelly, 2018; Larson & Lockee, 2009). It is unknown how instructional designers obtain project management knowledge and prepare to manage projects after completing an instructional design program. This unknown is despite researchers identifying a significant gap between what instructional designers are taught and what is done in the field and employers indicating that instructional design students entering the private sector cannot manage projects (Klein, 1989; Williams van Rooij, 2009; Williams van Rooij, 2010). This study aimed to identify how instructional designers obtain project management skills, instructional designers' beliefs on their ability to manage projects, and identify the need for project management integration into instructional design curricula. This quantitative study explored instructional designers' project management experiences and gained insight into their perceived ability to manage projects by deploying an online survey to collect participant responses. The results of this research suggest that the project management discipline can drive an organization's strategy and be processed forward. Equipping instructional designer students with this skill set would be priceless and enable them to become a commodity in today's job market. Future research opportunities include a longitudinal study analyzing instructional designer confidence levels after graduating from an instructional design program where project management is a part of the core curriculum and a study that analyzes instructional designer confidence levels and capabilities by demographic characteristics.
