In this dissertation, applications of the fusion of hard and soft control techniques in the field of biomedical engineering are addressed and investigated. The main contributions of the dissertation are: (1) Theory of closed loop optimal control for fixed-end point problem with mixed state-control functions in the performance index is developed, leading to the inverse matrix differential Riccati equation, whereas the work so far focused on performance index with quadratic functions in state alone and control alone. The developed fusion technique is applied to the control strategy of the circulatory system1. (2) Using a mathematical model for the interaction between the blood glucose and insulin concentration, a hybrid on-line control scheme is developed to accomplish an external blood glucose regulation2. (3) The shoe insert and the foot are modeled and combined to form an overall dynamical model. The developed model is used for the diabetic application to reduce the negative effects of diabetes on the foot. The desired foot pressure distribution is generated based on observed data from normal subject. The control scheme will sense the abnormal peaks and reduce it based on a desired foot pressure distribution 3. 1Naidu, D.
