Transformational cinema is a category for films that are specifically designed to showcase the change of being for characters diegetically on the screen and inspire transformation extradiegetically for the audience. This process is reflective of Arnold Van Gennep's Rites of Passage, which describes the journey individuals undertake when moving from one position in society to another. This transformational process involves the individual leaving their residence (be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual) and entering a liminal space where they must wrestle with the idea of what a new position means to them, undertake the challenges of adopting their new position, and return to society a new person, occupying a new position within their culture. In addition to the work of Van Gennep, the actual narrative physics of transformation are foundationally supported by the works of Plato, who establishes a visual metaphor for transformation in his famous cave allegory, which was in turn a response to the Socratic Elenchus-a process Socrates used to help his contemporaries evaluate their new philosophical ideas and presuppositions. Eisenstein expands on the Platonic and Socratic ideas by introducing the dialectic of cinema, which is the collision of two opposing thoughts in sequential scenes that synthesizes a third unique idea. Finally, Robert McKee's positive/negative coefficient of scenes demonstrates how Eisenstein's dialectic powers the narrative of a story, moving it towards its ultimate emotional conclusion. The extradiegetic impact of transformational films can be understood in direct correlation with the diegetic journey of the film's protagonist, which in turn, helps to inform critics and writers alike in their evaluation of a story's potential impact. And that is the purpose of all research: to provide tools, techniques, and processes for others to more easily, efficiently, and economically reproduce the research conclusions in their own work. This paper presents seven elements that are present in every transformational story (the encounter, the question, the constant, the turn, the commitment, the failure, the return) and presents Five Steps that occur in every transformation journey, regardless of the journey's moral nature.
