The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore how teachers use emotional intelligence in their daily practice, and how they use EI to build and maintain teacher-student relationships. Research questions that guide this study are 1) How do teachers use emotional intelligence in their teaching practices? 2) How do teachers use emotional intelligence as part of teacher-student relationship building? Trait EI theory provided the theoretical framework. Participants were four middle and secondary school teachers from the same independent school, with no prior emotional intelligence training. Teachers were given the TEIQue-SF and semi-structured interviews were conducted. Findings indicated that emotional intelligence is used by teachers within their teaching practices and specifically when building relationships with students. Another finding is that teachers need to know their students in order to help them manage their emotions. Further findings suggest that teachers use the factors of self-control and emotionality to help them cope with an unexpected crisis. Future research could look at Trait EI training for teachers. Additional research could be conducted on the emotions of teachers in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
