The last few decades have seen a large amount of investment into emerging economies. It is a common belief that firms enter many economies to diversify and increase their chance of profitability, and reduce the risk of market failure in one economy. The essence of this dissertation is to look at a country's governance and its institutions to determine if the home country's environment influences the performance of a multinational corporation (MNC). It is assumed that MNCs from developing economies have the knowledge and skills operating within similar markets; therefore, they are better able to compete within these types of markets. These skills are built from experience in working under authoritarian regimes, within ineffective governments, and poorly protected property rights. Those skills allow MNCs from developing economies to conquer difficulties and setbacks that the institutional environment creates. The theoretical dissertation base is built on the existing business literature, particularly on competitiveness, the nature, and the investment habits of MNCs, emerging markets, and the country's institutions. This generated several hypotheses, which were then examined by using a panel data analysis. The regression results show that governance indicators, explaining the home country's institutional environment, have a moderating impact on a firm's performance. Some have a higher significance level, and there is a difference between the effect of some indicators on companies coming from developing economies as opposed to firms coming from the developed economy. The study aims to help managers and policymakers in acknowledging that MNC's prior experience within a home environment affects its ability to be successful and profitable.
