The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand nurses perception of the use of motivational interviewing (MI) as a communication style for families with children at risk for unhealthy weight (UW) in Hawaii. The goal of this project was to improve current nursing practice through community-based collaboration, health promotion and wellness programming, and to help nurses become comfortable encouraging families to take preventive measures that could decrease the incidence of diseases associated with UW for families in Hawaii. The incidence of UW has increased in Hawaii, in part due to unhealthy eating habits with consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks, and in part due to a decrease in physical activity. This community based participatory research (CBPR) explored the experiences and perceptions of a group of nurses utilizing motivational interviewing, a counseling method they may not have been trained in previously, while encouraging nurses to practice MI techniques in a group setting in order to enhance their self-efficacy in its use. In addition, incorporating elements of Hawaii's unique cuisine into healthful eating options was a special component of this project. During focus group discussions, a number of themes emerged regarding MI and UW prevention, including: a lack of knowledge about motivational interviewing, lack of confidence in using MI as a communication style and counseling tool, and concerns about lack of time available to spend with patients to provide effective counseling on UW. Most current research focuses on reversing the trend of UW by traditional advice-giving by professionals. However, during the study, all nine participants recognized the merits of MI and increased their self-efficacy in using it as an effective, collaborative communication style and approach to engage families and address the issue of UW.
