The purpose of this study was to examine the effects sugary drink consumption, place of residence, age, race/ethnicity, and gender had on obesity in adolescents aged 12-17 living in California. This study utilized data from the 2014 California Health Interview Survey. The survey had 1,052 adolescents in participation and a response rate of 37.2%. The data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance to test for significance among the variables sugary drink consumption, place of residence, gender, race/ethnicity, age, and body mass index. The study found there were no significant differences in sugary drink consumption compared to place of residence, age, and gender. The study also showed there were no significant differences between the variables sugary drink consumption, place of residence, gender, race/ethnicity, age, and BMI. However, the data did find significance among sugary drink consumption, place of residence, and race/ethnicity, and also among sugary drink consumption, gender, race/ethnicity, age, and BMI. The results of this study suggest demographics have the most impact on sugary drink consumption and obesity, including race/ethnicity being the most common indicator of sugary drink consumption among teens. Several limitations regarding this study should be taken into consideration before generalizations can be made regarding the adolescent population in California.
