Implementing early intervention guidelines to reduce metabolic syndrome in adolescents taking second generation anti-psychotics (SGA) in a psychiatric residential setting by Satera Nicole Washington The purpose for this project was aimed at implementing an intervention to change the current practice to the evidence based practice guidelines associated with monitoring for metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents taking second generation anti-psychotics (SGAs) in a residential psychiatric setting within a 60 day time period. The objective of the study was to show how implementing the evidence based guideline for monitoring children and adolescents taking second generation anti-psychotics promotes early interventions by being aware of specific indicators and reduces dyslipidemia and waist circumference. This project is a cross sectional analysis that was conducted over a 60 day time period. The participants were the nursing staff and prescribing psychiatrist. An analysis was performed prior to the implementation of the guideline to seek what indicators were captured by nurses and what lab testing orders were in place as compared to the guidelines set forth by Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Canadian Pediatrics Society. Waist circumference measurements were collected at baseline at every 30 days following. Fasting lipid panels (triglycerides, cholesterol) were drawn on all patients 30 days prior to initiation of the guideline, therefore the follow up lab was drawn 60 days post guideline intervention. The evaluation period resulted in statistical significance in all domains discussed. Using the Wilcoxson matched paired test the study findings proved triglycerides, cholesterol, and waist circumference showed a decrease from pre-intervention to post intervention.
