The land tenure system in Barbuda is up for debate. Barbudans have practiced communal land tenure on the Island for hundreds of years; however, in 2017, the system was legally converted to a private land tenure system. Despite Barbuda's increasing vulnerability to climate change, the Island's ability to adapt to climate change has not been mentioned in the land tenure debate. This thesis shows that land tenure is an important aspect affecting climate vulnerability that is within Barbuda's control. It analyzes the two potential futures-one with communal land tenure and the other with a private land tenure system-that can affect the Island's ability to adapt in different ways. This thesis found that it matters which governing body has control over Barbudan land when it comes to reducing climate vulnerability. Further, this thesis argues that adaptive ability should be considered when selecting the optimal tenure system for the Island, and the chosen tenure system should be secured by ensuring that the practiced and legally recognized tenure systems are the same. Although this thesis lacks a conclusive determination of the land tenure system that would maximize Barbuda's ability to adapt to climate change, it nonetheless shows that land tenure can affect adaptive ability in Barbuda.
