Many individuals experience grief or will experience grief at some point in their lives. What about the therapists that experience grief when a client dies, not due to suicide? Who provides therapy for therapists? Counselors are affected when they experience the death of a client. Counseling education includes grief therapy training and suicide prevention training. However, being a trained professional in grief counseling instills knowledge to counsel others through the grief process but does this knowledge transfer to the therapist? Providing grief therapy is difficult and healing past the grief process is also difficult. It requires an active role and will require emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual energy. The need for this study is because little research exists that explores a professional counselor's responses to the death of a client not due to suicide. This study is being designed to examine the grief responses of professional counselors when they experience the death of a client not due to suicide. Creating a solution for therapists that experience grief associated with the death of a client, not related to suicide is critical. Not dealing appropriately with their own grief could result in insufficient therapeutic skills being applied to clients. The knowledge gained concerning grief and grief responses will be beneficial to the professional counselor, cross other disciplines, and the educational institutions. The results can promote counselor health and a successful therapeutic alliance when a counselor experiences grief from the loss of a client not due to suicide.
