The musical history of Vietnam is indebted to the country's dozens of ethnic groups as well as influences from countries near and far outside its current borders. Traditional Vietnamese music has changed immensely throughout centuries of existence. Vietnamese traditional and Western classical music styles have inspired Vietnamese musicians living inside and outside of Vietnam. Each of the composers in this document was born in Vietnam and now lives in the United States. P. Q. Phan, Van-Anh Vo, and Nhật Minh Nguyễn have all had musical experiences in Vietnam and now live in the US resulting in their respective compositional approaches. My goal is to describe how they integrate aspects of Vietnamese traditional and Western classical music using a cello composition by each of them. My research focuses on their goals, compositional approach, intended concert experience, and insight for future performers. The case studies demonstrate an integral presence, cultivation, and metamorphosis of traditional Vietnamese musical materials within a modern conception of Western classical music.
