Affect theory has been raising its importance as an open space for academic development in making sense of personal to sociopolitical topics. This media practice project is an attempt to connect the affective turn in cultural studies to films that depict women's sense of being in society, their feelings of the everyday, and how they are shaped by political and economic ends. The project engages with these contemporary films in the context of Japan and Taiwan in particular: Our Little Sister, Shoplifters by Kore-eda Hirokazu, True Mother by Naomi Kawase, Little Big Women by Hsu Chen-Chieh. The thesis is divided into three sections, each with a different approach. The first section provides an overview of affect theory. The research starts from the historical development of affect theory to the debate over the distinction between affect and emotion, as well as how it has been adopted by media and cultural studies. The author concentrates on feminist and anti-racist scholars, as well as a few who specialize in East Asian cultural studies. The second section is an artist statement considering "essay film" as an embodied practice of affect theory. As this project took essay film as the form of practice, this section drew on filmmakers who made significant contributions to this genre as well as scholarly texts that informed a historical review of the essentials of essay films. This statement explained how the author incorporates the essay film's historical concepts and ideas and what the final film work intends for personal means and reflections.The last section is the media practice, Unspoken Hers: A Cinematic experience of Women's Affect. This essay film incorporates footage from the films mentioned and experiments with video editing. Exploring the narration of women's stories, this essay film inquires into their feelings of resentment, anxiety, shame, sympathy, and more to the spectators' reflections.
