Participatory design (PD) is an approach to landscape architecture that engages participants in design and decision-making processes aimed at democracy, community building, empowerment, equity, and situation-based action. However, there is a lack of guidance on how to fully account for these efforts, so this thesis asks how PD can be evaluated in a way that measures its aims, examines its appropriate project phases, and is conducted in alignment with its principles. To do this, this study utilizes and builds upon the meta-analysis framework developed by Bossen, Dindler, and Iverson (2016), through which six case studies are examined. The findings show that across the case studies, nearly all project phases were measured; one study explicitly evaluated collective efficacy and empowerment, and half implicitly addressed mutual learning, community building, and situation-based action-but that none included participants in the design of the evaluation or were conducted to further the aims of PD.
