Through the age of pre-science, enlightenment and postmodernism, belief systems, whether sacred or mundane, magical or rational, spiritual or empirical, constantly evolve. Such world views provide meaning in the face of uncertainty in life and bring people together, and art and design play a significant role in this process, as well as show the clash or tension between old beliefs and evolving modern civilization.This thesis examines the artifacts, tools and rituals' role in the formation of belief systems and art's position in the communication of beliefs. Though science and technology have become the most commonly accepted belief system today, we still carry beliefs from the past and cultivate new ones through symbols, architecture, storytelling, etc., as a part of our constantly emerging culture. This study forms the basis for understanding re-enchantment in the modern times. My design research is an attempt to open up a discussion on new possibilities of re-enchantment through communications design.
