Many neighborhood environments that are prevalent in today's western society lack the sense of community belonging that its residents desire. We see the detrimental effects of this general disregard to social connection in all types of neighborhood models including in the midst of suburban sprawl. However, most surprisingly this lack of connection is even more prevalent it in the densest city apartment buildings as well. Despite the proximity and density of units in apartment buildings, there is a lacking sense of community and connectedness due to the absence of meaningful incidental interactions. These urban conditions lack social spaces that connect people together and reduce the isolation that can come from living in a singular unit.This thesis aims to solve the issue of social isolation in the urban environment through creation of a new kind of neighborhood completely. This new "neighborhood typology" building aims to extract the social elements that make for good neighborhoods and incorporate them into a singular proposal. Breaking this large scale neighborhood building into smaller blocks allows for the design to be centered around the human scale. Clustering these units and programs into blocks allows the amalgamation of them to form unique and purposeful adjacencies and communities. Within these buildings, the aim is not to be deterministic in their direction to social connection, but instead work to formulate the spontaneous interactions between neighbors that can connect us together. The main intention of the thesis is to create a framework that allows the building to be responsive to the site conditions and scale of the environment in which it is placed.
