Thesis (M.L.A.)--University of Georgia, 2022.
Includes bibliographical references
While providing the necessary infrastructure and amenities is important for improving pedestrian experiences and promoting walkability in urban areas, this thesis proposes that creating great streetscapes goes beyond meeting these basic requirements. While it is true many great streets for pedestrians have engaging destinations which draw people to them, often times they are still just as enjoyable to walk along without a predetermined destination in mind. This thesis explores what elements play a role in encouraging this kind of walking experience and how designing streetscapes to promote pedestrian discovery can be utilized to improve urban environments. This framework, based on analysis of previous research, is further explored through case studies and is finally evaluated as a design tool through a design proposal and critique of a site along Memorial Drive in Atlanta, Georgia.
