This basic qualitative interview study explored the perceptions of 18 gender-expansive individuals for whom gender identity exists beyond society's binary construct of gender. Participants have been or are employees or students at a four-year public higher education institution in southern California. This study examined participants' perceptions about the ways in which the institution has honored their gender identity; it also identified how these individuals have responded with resilience and resistance when they have encountered barriers and challenges at the institution. Overall, participants reported feeling relatively safe and supported at the institution, due in part to institutional efforts such as gender-neutral bathrooms; online portals and documents that allow individuals to change their pronouns, gender, and names; workshops and other programming offered by the university's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program; and protective policies and corrective follow-through when these are broken. When a postsecondary institution (PSI) has created an inclusive campus culture and climate, it provides an opportunity to practice the next frontier of inclusivity for gender-expansive individuals: identity-affirming practices. Consequently, this study concludes with recommendations for policy and practice that can help cisgender PSI community members understand how to protect and affirm gender-expansive individuals.
