The purpose of this quantitative, correlational-predictive study is to assess to what extent the hiring managers', living or working in California, general acceptance of autism (GA), and attitudes towards treating autistic behavior (ATAB) will predict their societal attitudes towards autism (SATA). The target population is individuals responsible for, or influencers of, hiring decisions, referred to as hiring managers, living or working in California, over 18 who do not identify as autistic. The sample consisted of 210 participants. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) provided the theoretical framework for this quantitative study. The Autism Attitudes Acceptance Scale measured the predictor variables of general acceptance and attitudes towards treating autistic behaviors. The Societal Attitudes Towards Autism 16-item instrument measured social attitudes towards autism, the criterion variable. The first research question sought to determine if GA and ATAB were predictors of SATA. Multiple regression analysis for research question one indicated the failure to reject the null hypothesis (F(2, 207) = 1.279, p = .281, R2 = .012, adj. R2 = .003). Regression analysis for research question two, does GA predict SATA, indicated the failure to reject the null hypothesis (F(1, 208) = 1.738, p = .189 , R2 = .008, adj. R2 = .004). Regression analysis for the final research questions, does ATAB predict SATA, resulted in the failure to reject the null hypothesis (F(1, 208) = 2.228, p = .137, R2 = .011, adj. R2 = .006). The implications of these findings suggest that personal beliefs on the opinions towards autistics are more individualized and further supports autism as a complicated topic not easily understood or generalized.
