Previous scholarly research demonstrates a significant gap in the topic of competitive cheerleading. Rather, previous scholarly research focuses on injury prevalence, occurrence, and prevention. Although injuries are a significant part of competitive cheerleading worthy of investigating, how these athletes cope with this adversity is just as significant. As an intention to add to the literature, this research study investigates the experiences of how competitive cheerleaders cope with adversity in the sport. This study applied the generic qualitative inquiry methodology to interview nine All Star competitive cheerleader participants. This study applied the self-determination theory as a framework to magnify the constructs and variables drawn from the participants' descriptions of coping with adversity. The descriptions of their experiences about how these athletes cope with adversity seek to gain an explicit understanding of the motivation to cope with adversity for three or more years of competitive cheerleading. The literature review encourages more scholarly research in other areas of competitive cheerleading because the sport is fast growing in population with insufficient scholarly information to assist these athletes in areas other than injuries. New but still a prominent sport, competitive cheerleading lacks research, representation, and respect. A more explicit insight into competitive cheerleading establishes more awareness to assist these athletes with their adversities. The data analysis from the participants' responses revealed five themes concerning how they cope: Common Adversity Begets Common Goal, Motivation, Injuries are Multifaceted, Separate World, and Mental Toughness. The results show that competitive cheerleaders apply coping skills intrinsically and extrinsically with fluctuating along the continuum of motivation despite even the most difficult adversity.
