Irrelevant number activations can also be a source of interference leading to errors and confusion. Therefore, the ability to control and inhibit this irrelevant numerical information is of high importance.It has been previously suggested that the skill development level may be related to the ability to inhibit an irrelevant dimension. The literature in the numerical domain demonstrates that less skilled individuals have less numerical interference than an average skilled person. However, it is less clear what interference level is experienced by high numerically skilled individuals, as different theories might predict a non-linear relationship between numerical proficiency and numerical interference. Specifically, it is possible that both groups, those with low and high numerical abilities, will exhibit a lower numerical interference than the group with average numerical skills. Moreover, the current study also aimed to examine whether the inhibition abilities of the three groups are related to a specific mechanism of numerical inhibition abilities or to a general inhibition mechanism. To explore these questions, the current study examined the relationship between the observed numerical interference and a wide range of arithmetical abilities - low, average, and high - among sixty-one children aged 10. The participants were asked to perform two Stroop tasks: numerical - a physical comparison task, and a control task: the color-word Stroop task. The numerical-physical comparison task results indicated that the group with average abilities showed the highest interference effect and reverse facilitation effect compared to the other groups. There was an increase in the interference observed between the low-skilled group and the average-skilled group and, interestingly, the observed interference also decreased from the average to the high-skilled group.The control color word Stroop task did not reveal such a difference. These results are further discussed in the context of the development of numerical control in populations with different numerical skills as well as the specificity of this control to the numerical domain.
