Human service organizations are aware of leaders' need to lead and build leadership capacity. Human service leaders are accessing their capacity and actions and formulating a leadership philosophy. Articulating a clear leadership philosophy is essential to implementing well-developed leadership practices. A generic qualitative design was used in the current study to allow human services leaders to express their thoughts and perspectives about their experiences in adopting a leadership philosophy. The research question for the study was "How do human service administrators and managers describe their experiences in adopting a leadership philosophy?" There were 12 interviews conducted with human services leaders in a large urban area in a midwestern state of the United States. Data were collected and organized using thematic analysis, which resulted in the identification of four themes (a) importance of adopting a leadership philosophy, (b) practices for seeking leadership guidance, (c) development of professional judgment, and (d) gaining perspectives on leadership characteristics. The study's findings revealed that human services leaders had adopted a leadership philosophy but did not incorporate their organization's mission into their leadership philosophy. This study's findings can assist human services leaders in creating a leadership philosophy based on its organizational vision, mission, culture, and development.
