This study presents an investigation of prosocial and aggressive content in Thai children's books and how this content relates to societal problems in contemporary Thailand. One hundred books containing stories for 4- to 8-year-olds were analyzed for (a) frequency of eight types of prosocial behavior; (b) six types of aggressive behavior; (c) characteristics of story actors who initiated these behaviors or were affected by them; and (d) the setting, motives, and consequences of the behavior. Thai parents, teachers, and ministry officials also were interviewed to determine how they perceive children's books. Prosocial behavior occurred in 92 of the 100 books, with a mean frequency of 4.3 incidents per book. Caring is the most common type of prosocial behavior performed by story characters. Cooperation of a group of individuals on the same task occurred infrequently. This is a shortcoming of the books, because Thailand is rapidly changing to a high-technology society which requires a high level of group cooperation. Aggressive behavior occurred in 55 of the books, with a mean of 1.8 incidents per book. The aggressive behavior usually resulted in punishment, but it also was often glamorized. This is a problem because violence in Thai society is increasing. Although violence in TV and film is strictly regulated by the government, books and other print media are not. Other noteworthy findings are that male story characters are much more likely to engage in aggressive behavior than female story characters, and there are few instances of male characters engaging in constructive solutions to problems. Many stories take place in rural settings, which do not reflect the lifestyle of the increasing number of children who live in cities. Story characters and plots lacked the depth that can nurture the development of moral judgement and self-identity. The interviewed parents, teachers, and ministry officials do not seem bothered by aggressive content in children's books if a moral message also is present. Few of them use the moral teachings in these books to help children develop the moral judgement needed to cope with the complex issues that are arising as Thailand becomes a member of the global society.
