This thesis demonstrates the importance of Gustave Caillebotte's paintings in the nineteenth century and their role in depicting the modernization of Paris. Three major aspects of modern Paris are represented in Caillebotte's paintings: the figure of the flaneur as a cultural character or observer; the renovation of urban spaces following Haussmannization; and contemporary fashion in men's and women's clothing. These three points will be explored through two specific paintings that Caillebotte exhibited at the Third Impressionist Exhibition of 1877, Rue de Paris; temps de pluie and Le Pont de l'Europe. In these paintings, Caillebotte provides a holistic picture of his contemporary time through his depiction of the latest changes in the cultural landscape of mid-to-late nineteenth century Paris. This study aims to analyze the importance of the modernization of Paris and its lasting influence on the culture of the nineteenth century as experienced by Caillebotte as a first-hand observer.
