The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to examine the experiences of minority employees in the United States in response to organizational leaders' diversity and inclusion efforts. Furthermore, this study seeks to fill a gap in existing research on workplace diversity by exploring minority employees' perceptions of the effectiveness of diversity and inclusion practices in the workplace, and how those perceptions impact their intention to stay or leave their current employer. Through semi-structured interviews, participants shared their experiences and perspectives on diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Participants' responses were examined via thematic analysis using three theories as the framework: social identity, optimal distinctiveness theory, and theory of intergroup leadership. Eight themes emerged from the analysis of the participants' coded responses. These themes provided insights into specific strategies focused on diversity and inclusion for leaders to build upon within their organizations that will help them retain quality talent. Participants also emphasized the importance of trust, communication, and transparency in the workplace. Based on the findings in this study, both positive and negative diversity and inclusion experiences played a role in minority employees' desire to remain at their current place of work or transition to a new workplace. The data also revealed that even if diversity and inclusion are not always primary motivators for minority employee turnover, they do play a part in the employees' decision.
