The disclosure of one's sexual orientation (coming out of the closet) is for many lesbian and gay individuals, one of the most difficult tasks in life, especially in regard to parental and family reactions (Hillier, 2002). In this study, the researcher aimed to develop a greater understanding of the experiences of families upon the disclosure of non-heterosexuality. In this qualitative study, the researcher employed a phenomenology (Creswell, 2018) strategy of inquiry with the objective of learning how families going through the coming-out process make-sense of this phenomenon and successfully adjust and integrate the LG (lesbian or gay) family member back into the family system. The findings of this study are discussed with regards to current literature on lesbian and gay people and their families. Suggestions for future research and implications for Marriage and Family Therapists are also presented. Prior to this study, only a handful of other materials were available which went into depth regarding the familial experiences of both the LG individual and their respective family members. Previous studies either utilized a quantitative design which lacked the richness of response of the current study, or only regarded the experiences of the LG individual in relation to coming out to their family. The present study presents information aimed at bridging this gap and understanding more fully how each person involved within the family experiences and processes the phenomenon of coming out. The results of this study can be used as both a guide for families going through the coming out process as well as a resource for therapists who may encounter clientele going through this phenomenon. The intent of this study is to provide a resource which recognizes the challenges of coming out while also providing positive feedback and encouragement to both families and therapists alike.
