By as early as the 19th century, a great number of overseas Chinese students had begun to travel to China to participate in higher education or attend imperial examinations. In doing so, they conducted trans-boundary activities, thereby building up an active transboundary movable network that linked Nanyang (South-east Asia) and China. The establishment of Jinan University in 1906 was an initial action undertaken by the Chinese government with the intention of attracting overseas Chinese students to study in China. In combination with a series of policy initiatives and the establishment of schools catering specifically to Chinese students, this encouraged an increasing number of overseas Chinese students from Nanyang to study in China. During the 1920s, overseas Chinese students based in south-east Asia began to collectively mobilize and form student unions of overseas Chinese students. These came to function as "intermediary channels" that helped to guide interactions between modern China and NanyangPrevious "China- Centered Approach" research has tended to focus on the development of the Chinese government and the history of well-known Chinese educational institutions such as Jinan University and prominent schools. However, these were primarily engaged from a Chinese perspective, and this meant that the influence of the "Nanyang factor" on policies (focused on overseas Chinese students) and the development of schools tended to be ignored. In addition, very few scholars have ever extensively studied the activities of overseas Chinese students in China and Nanyang.In drawing on the new transnational approach that has been developed and applied by many scholars like Aihwa Ong, this thesis discusses policies and school development focused on overseas Chinese students. It aspires to a balanced and trans-boundary perspective that encompasses the complex activities of overseas Chinese students based in Nanyang and modern China. Besides re-examining how the "Nanyang factor" influenced policies and schools focused on overseas Chinese students, this thesis will also recognize and acknowledge the historical agency of these students and other overseas Chinese.

520 $a 1923 年春的上海，在一份名为《青光》的报刊上，爆发了一场涉及回国侨生群体的论战，论战的发起人是内地学生 Ch.H 君（原名不详），他在 3 月 30 号的《青光》上发表了一篇名为《华侨学生与国内学生的比较》的文章，他在文中指出，华侨学生与内地学生的主要区别有五点："华侨学生运动重于求学"、"华侨学生重英文，轻汉文"、"华侨学生感情淡薄，故鲜深切的友谊，少同国内同学往来"、"多数的人喜欢装外面"。1Ch.H 君的这篇文章，表面上是为了对华侨学生和国内学生进行比较，但实际上在字里行间却充斥着对华侨学生"不学无术"、"铺张浪费"等种种批评，这些批评中多有不实和过激之处，因此不少侨生在看到 Ch.H 君的这篇文章发布之后感到十分不满，Y.K.Chen 君（原名不详）以及北洋大学的张汉鑫两人便立即撰写文章驳斥 Ch.H 君，他们分别在 4 月 4 日和 6 日的《青光》上发表了两篇文章，结合自己在南洋生活以及在国内就读的经验，针对 Ch.H 君所提出的对华侨学生的批评进行了逐一的反驳和解释。2如果从现在的眼光回顾这场论战，华侨学生所撰写的文章显然是更有说服力的，但问题的关键并不在于双方辩论的胜负，而在于在那个时代，即使侨生的说法更加有理有据，Ch.H 君的看法反而更能反映当时人们对侨生的普遍印象。1921 年，三位南洋侨生从北京大学毕业后选择回到南洋，他们的同伴纷纷向他们赠诗送别，同在北京大学就读的内地生刘宗尧便将这些诗词汇编在一起，并撰写了一篇小序。刘宗尧在序中提到，他过去一直认为南洋地区的侨民普遍都"性多好惰，有苟安之心，无进取之志"，但他的三位侨生同学却能"日杂处于裸体跣足之伦，翘然特出，慕宗邦之文化，远涉波涛，回国求学，以弘毅相期许"，因此他不得不对三位侨生刮目相看，认为他们是当代的"豪杰之士"。3中国自古以来便有送别之际互相赠送诗文的传统，这些诗文中往往多为华而不实的溢美之词，但刘宗尧的这篇序中所体现出来的对南洋侨民的歧视以及自诩为"宗邦"的傲慢，却足以映射出那个时代中国知识分子对南洋的认知及对自身的定位。海外华人曾长期被中国知识分子和中国政府贬低为"粗鄙无文"的下等人，南洋地区4亦被视为远离中国的鄙陋之地，新加坡的《叻报》上有一段文字，很好的展现了中国文人对处于"边缘"的南洋地区的偏见：叻地僻居海外，遥隔中原，故其风俗衰陋异常，说者谓此缘声教之所未敷，所以风气有如斯之陋，盖其居民多係未尝学问，目不观诗书之化，耳不闻孔孟之道，其于义理茫然，所窥惟日以逞小忿、利私囊为事。5.
