Although the concept of self-care for mental health workers in the United States has a growing body of psychological literature, this is not the case in other countries, including the Philippines. As the research on self-care for mental health workers has continued to develop, it is becoming evident that further exploration is needed in relation to different predictor variables, populations, and professions (Butler, Carello, & Maguin, 2016). Inherent to the ideals and values of the mental health profession is the focus on the needs of the client, possibly at the cost of the mental health professional. The potential outcome may be a mental health worker who is numb to his or her day-to-day life stressors and may experience burnout at a much faster rate in comparison to other professions (Wilson, 2016). The research on burnout has discussed the importance of self-care but has not examined how self-care should be implemented in particular cultures such as the Philippines. In the Philippines, a typical mental health worker's caseload may be more than 3 times the average in developed countries such as the United States (Puig, Yoon, Callueng, An, & Lee, 2014). The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of self-care, provide a framework of self-care components important to Philippine mental health workers, and explore any possible correlations between Philippine mental health workers' experience of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and vicarious trauma in relation to their self-care practices.
