Born in Jiangnan area, Lou Jinyuan (1688-1776) became a Daoist priest at an early age and continuously pursued his Daoist career at Longhu shan 龍虎山. After his stay at Jiangxi, he followed the fifty-fifth Heavenly Master Zhang Xilin 張錫麟 to Beijing due to an imperial request on liturgical performance at the court. For nearly 50 years in the reigns of Yongzheng and Qianlong, Master Lou chiefly presided the Daoist ritual performance for the court and imperial family. He was assigned to rebuild the largest imperial Daoist temple and compiled ritual scriptures, which were still used today. In short, Master Lou was one of the most well-known and influential court Daoists in the Qing period. This dissertation aims at an in-depth study of Lou Jinyuan's life-long Daoist career and his Daoist writings. Primary research materials include historical documents, such as annals, archives, inscriptions, gazetteers, anthologies and essays. Relied upon these primary resources, this dissertation will further investigate Lou's Daoist activities in Beijing, his relationship with Zhengyi sects in Longhu shan and Jiangnan. Finally, this dissertation will examine Master Lou's contribution to Daoist ritual tradition. There were three main areas of Daoist activities of Master Lou founded in Beijing: 1) performing Daoist rituals for the court in the Imperial City, 2) taking in charge of the Daolu si 道錄司 which was the State's highest Daoist administration, and 3) managing the capital Daoist temples such as Da Guangming dian 大光明殿 and Dongyue miao 東嶽廟. In this part, this dissertation will focus on the aspects of how Master Lou exercised his designated Daoist power over Daoist officials and Daoist priests acrossthe imperial empire in the early Qing Dynasty. The case study of Master Lou's secular life will help us understand his social interactions with imperial family members, officialdom, literati, and eunuchs. One of the valuable primary resources for this research project is the sixteenvolume Gazetteer of Longhu Shan complied by Master Lou. Relied on this Gazetteer, this dissertation will discuss how Master Lou gained the control of the Shangqing palace 上清宮 at Longhu Shan. It is known that the Zhenren fu 真人府 of Heavenly Master regained the control of the palace after Lou died in 1776. The main purpose of this part of research is to clarify the power relationship between Master Lou and Zhang Heavenly Master so that a balanced understanding of the Longhu shan Daoist history in the early Qing dynasty can be achieved. In addition, this dissertation finds that the well-known Daoist temple of Xuanmiao guan 玄妙觀 in Suzhou was closely related with Master Lou. During his stay in Beijing, Lou recruited a group of Jiangnan Daoist priests 法官 to serve the imperial liturgical needs in the capital. The final part of this dissertation will examine the master-disciples relationship between Master Lou and Daoist priests in Jiangnan. Given as an evidence, it will also study the Taiji lingbao Jilian keyi 太極靈寶祭煉科儀 and examine how Master Lou collated and compiled this Jiangnan ritual text and its later transmission. In summary, this dissertation studies Master Lou's biographical life, Daoist activities, social networks, liturgical inheritance, and ritual texts. It attempts to reexamine the real life of such a remarkable court priest like Master Lou. By doing so, Daoist scholars can be benefited from a better understanding of the Daoist history in the early Qing period.
