The homelessness is a growing phenomenon worldwide as well as in India. This phenomenon is a matter of concern especially in urban areas and it is worst in metro cities. There are many who cannot afford housing to have a regular and safe shelter and bound to stay in streets. Shelter is one of the basic human need that the homeless people are unable to manage and along with that they also find difficult to fulfil other two basic human needs of food and clothes. The homeless people, like other population sub-groups, are most disadvantaged population groups. The life of the homeless is never easy and in the case of homeless women, it is very difficult to cope with the living environment. The homeless population is at high risk of getting various types of illness, deprived of the different kind of service utilizations. They are commonly found to be socially and economically backward and left out in most of the national policies. The broad objective of this research is to understand the living conditions, personal hygiene practices, nature of violence, health care and social security among homeless women in Delhi. This research used the primary data which was collected from the homeless women in Delhi during July - December, 2015. Considering the nature of study population, time and resources, it was decided to collect data from 300 homeless women. To get the diversity among the study population, two-third sample was collected from the women who were staying at night shelters and one-third sample was collected from the women who were staying in street. The night shelters, that are registered with highest women population (more than 50), are considered for the survey. Mixed method approach was done for data collection. A structured questionnaire has been used for quantitative data, while qualitative schedule was used to collect through indepth interviews and key-informant interviews to support the findings from quantitative. The interview schedule collects the detailed information on profile of the respondents, sociodemographic and economic characteristics, living conditions, hygiene practices, vulnerabilities, health and health seeking behaviour, mental health, and social support and security. The study used univariate and bivariate methods to understand different aspects of homeless women, while multivariate logistic regression was used to understand the associated factors with respect to violence. Few indices are also computed to get a comprehensive understand.The study found that majority of the homeless are migrated from rural areas mostly due to the breakdown of marriage, maltreatment in family, and searching of jobs. The homeless women don't have proper access to basic facilities such as drinking water, sanitation, bathing and sanitary napkins to use during menstrual cycle, and it is worst among those are living in street. Substance use is a common practice among the homeless women and they suffer from substance use related health problems. The homeless women also get involved in self-harming behavior due to substance use, depression and inter-personal anger. Violence in any form - physical, sexual and emotional against the homeless women are common as about 48% reported experience of any violence which is substantially higher among the women living in street. The homeless women are more prone to experience health problems. The homeless women had reported of low awareness and negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS and low awareness about contraceptive methods. There is a greater involvement of homeless women in various sexual activities either forcefully or for earning. The study observed that a use of condom is very low. Social support and security to the homeless women is another matter of concern as the homeless women don't poses any kind of valid document of identity to avail any kind of Govt. scheme. The homeless women don't have access to any kind of support such as getting education or any vocational training, getting work or employment for earning, and any health care services which certainly will help to improve their livelihood.
