In this dissertation, I employed positioning theory, space, and agency to frame how six Indonesian English language academics housed in Mutiara University constructed their academic identity as they navigate Tri Dharma. Grounded in social constructionism, this study used qualitative inquiry to explore and understand the participants' academic identity construction using the following data sources: biographical information, critical incidents, professional documents, spatial artifact narratives, interviews, reflections on graphs, and a researcher journal. I analyzed and interpreted the data resources by using narrative analysis and a coding system. The findings presented through the participants' narratives highlighted the interplay between the participants' professional backgrounds, belief system, professional practices, negotiations, and working environment constructed and re-constructed their academic identity as English language academics.This dissertation consists of a prologue and five chapters. The prologue presents a brief background of my early professional path as an English language academic and contextual information of Tri Dharma in the Indonesian higher education as the exigence for the following chapters. Chapter One introduces a brief theoretical framework, research questions, research design, researcher positionality, and the significance of the study. Chapter Two presents the theoretical framework and literature reviews on academic identity, positioning theory, space, andecological agency. Chapter Three details the research design and methodological approaches used in this study including the data sources and data collection, and data analysis methods. Chapters Four presents the findings of this study, namely narrative analysis of six English language academics through a snapshot of their teaching, research, and service. In light of participants' positioning, professional space, and agency, each participant's snapshot is followed by the interpretation of the participant's Tri Dharma. This narrative analysis offers insights into the participants' positioning, professional space, and agency in constructing their academic identity. Lastly, Chapter Five discusses four salient themes emerged from coding system. The themes include space as a site of alienation and engagement, multiple positions in higher education, professional agent in academe, and the bricolage of academic identity in Tri Dharma. This chapter also offers a conclusion, study implications for English language academics, language teacher programs, and higher educations, followed by future research directions. To end, I present my final reflections of my unfinished academic identity as an English language academic.
