This Final Project for the doctorate of musical arts, majoring in orchestral conducting, was written in order to examine the compositional and performance history of Messiaen's "Turangalila-symphonie"; to consider its place in the context of Messiaen's own achievement, and in that of his contemporaries trying to achieve similar goals; to look at issues of the work's uniqueness, its craft and technique, its derivation from Indian, Balinese and other sources, and its narrative and symbolic character; to analyze the narrative and metaphorical content of the 'Tristan Trilogy' in which it is placed, and the aspects of Tristan and Isolde found within and revealed by Messiaen's compositional procedures; to anticipate and account for purely practical problems in score study and preparation, in rehearsal and performance; and, to propose means of realizing the whole of Messiaen's spiritual vision for the work, and of communicating to an audience his wide concern for color, for timbre, for both rhythmical exactitude and liberty of expression.
