Korean-German composer Isang Yun (1917-1995) is known for his unique harmonic and compositional language, his efforts to revive Korean culture following the nation's independence from annexation, and his inclusion of Korean folk idioms in his programmatic works. Throughout his life and his devotion to musical composition, he carried with him a lifelong reverence and love for his native instrument-the cello. Due to this sentiment, he refrained from composing for the cello as a solo instrument until much later in his career. Among these late works is his Sieben Etuden fur Violoncello Solo, a set of etudes that demand the practitioner's conscious execution of each etude's technical demands and prescribed character. The intention of this effort is to examine this work's pedagogical significance as a holistically-composed addition to widely-used cello etudes, to explore its relevance to modern cello pedagogy, and to provide a pedagogical approach to these etudes. This pedagogical approach will be partially based on my own experiences, as a student and emerging educator, learning these etudes in an approach informed by embodied metacognition. Definitions and contexts will be provided for this study's inclusion of embodied metacognition, its invaluable impact on my experience studying Yun's etudes, and its influences on my pedagogical approaches.Necessary contexts regarding his compositional techniques and harmonic language will also be provided, as well as brief surveys on widely used cello etudes and methods in contemporary pedagogy. Though not exhaustive, the comparisons drawn are meant to highlight what Yun's etudes add to a practitioner's sensitivity to one's own palettes in dynamics and articulation, awareness of timbre, left hand technique, and intonation-a sensitivity that demands complete cognitive and physical awareness, and an inner freedom to express the amorphous characters contained in his etudes.
