The purpose of this qualitative exploratory study was to investigate the leadership behaviors that impact the ecological engagement of employees in the auto manufacturing industry. The problem addressed in this study was current leadership practices fail to support employee ecological engagement in the auto manufacturing industry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 participants who had experience in the automotive industry, leadership, or none to determine the leadership behaviors that impact the ecological engagement of employees in the auto manufacturing industry. The data collected was analyzed with Quirkos, to identify five themes: (a) the level of environmental and sustainability knowledge and thinking, (b) the mindset related to innovation, employee engagement, and leadership behavior in the ecological engagement of employees in the automotive industry, (c) the level of employee commitment and desire to want to do the right thing in regards to protecting the environment, (d) the impact of communication and transferring of information is to an organization and employee engagement, and (e) the desires of the employees from an ecological mindset. Leadership behaviors such as communication, presence, knowledge, commitment, adaptation to change, and views regarding climate change have a meaningful impact on the ecological engagement of employees in the auto manufacturing industry. Participants did not feel that leadership behavior would hinder them from being ecologically engaged but felt that it was necessary for organizational success.
