This doctoral research study examined how instructional videos that are created using documentary filmmaking conventions can impact the student's online learning experience. With an inductive qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven experienced online learners who were currently enrolled in or alum of a graduate-level program at a private university in the northeastern United States. Based on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia learning, four superordinant themes and eleven sub-themes surfaced in the data analysis that led to three major findings. First, graduate online learners can easily identify filmmaking conventions, remembering their specific educational objectives. Second, when educational videos are produced using documentary filmmaking conventions this positively impacts the student experience. Third, graduate students value high-quality educational videos that are customized for their online courses because they encourage engagement in their learning. These findings were contemplated within the context of the current literature regarding effective design practices of educational video and their impact on learner engagement and impact on the study experience. Keywords: online learning, educational video, documentary filmmaking, learner impact.
