In the field of ground robotics, off-road path planning is a challenging problem that arises in such wide-ranging applications as construction, farming, mining, planetary exploration, and military robotics. The focus of this work is on discovering the relationships between uncertainties present in the path planning process for intelligent vehicles and the mobility of these vehicles in off-road environments. Specifically, this work examines uncertainty in the obstacle maps generated for path planning and uncertainty due to errors in the sensing process and shows how they are related to the total traversal distance. Additionally, a method for obtaining an approximation of an average speed that produces a time-minimum traversal of the obstacle field while maintaining a sufficient distance between the vehicle and the obstacles is described.
