The dissertation examines how and why the mentalities and patterns of behavior of China's younger generations changed, and the implications of this transition for the larger society in the 1980s with a reference to the social and cultural background of the 1989 democratic movement. It consists of two general parts, and the approaches of the study include both chronological description and thematic analysis. Part One describes chronologically important political, social and cultural events and activities that happened in the society and among youths. These events and activities reflected how young Chinese, who carried the legacies of past decades and the impact of the Cultural Revolution, responded to the challenges from the rapid transformation that occurred from within the society and from Western influences. It presents the changes in their political beliefs, their views on the meaning of life, their ideas about the relations between society and individuals, and their attitudes toward education, money, job, lifestyle, marriage, sex, etc. While showing these major changes, the study also reveals the continuous function of certain fundamental Chinese cultural values. Part Two first discusses three interwoven trends from the above changes: from a morality of collectivism to one stressing individuals; from a holistic doctrine to pluralistic beliefs; and from various idealistic quests to pragmatic and materialistic pursuits. It also points out the fundamental contradiction in the social values in the 1980s between the orthodox value system of righteousness based on collectivism and the re-emerged values of utilitarianism with individual standards. The analytical part then addresses important variations resulting from generational (in a sociological sense) and urban-rural discrepancies. Finally, it explores the internal as well as external forces that caused the changes in values with an emphasis on the roles played by Western academic thought and popular culture.
