The thesis research has tested allegations about recent rise in China's fertility by using survey data collected in Anhui province from about 4500 households. Controlling for age, the Children Ever Born (CEB) level for temporary migrants is slightly higher than that of permanent residents, but lower than the level at the temporary migrants' origins. Family planning has had the dominant negative effect on level of fertility, compared to effects of socioeconomic conditions and population redistribution. Analyses of survival and hazard curves demonstrate that patterns of delayed childbearing vary among different migration group and across birth intervals. Differentials in patterns of the delay tend to vanish starting from the third interval, reflecting the fact that most of the higher parity births occurred before the strict family planning programs, especially for permanent residents. The findings of the study support the adaptation hypothesis which argues that migrants adapt urban attitudes and behavior with respect to marriage and childbearing after a period of residence in urban places. Distance moved and separation between spouses have negative association with CEB. The study points to strong negative effects of population redistribution on CEB among temporary migrants, who move more frequently than among permanent residents, who move less frequently. Moves and separations between spouses tend to be fewer as the birth intervals pregress. Moves and separations not only delay childbearing during the migration process but also after migration. This is verified by the "post move" effect on the hazard to have a child in a given birth interval. The operation of both selectivity and disruption is therefore suggested by the analyses on both level and timing of fertility in the Anhui survey data. Overall, temporary migrants tend to reduce the hazard to have the first child but to increase the hazard to have the second and the third child, compared with permanent residents at the urban destinations. The level and the timing of fertility of temporary migrants suggests that the overall rise in the level of fertility in China cannot be attributed to temporary migration.
