This dissertation is a comparative study of 200 Chinese and American children's books published in the years 1984-89. The comparison is focused on the sex role socialization function of the books contents. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were employed for this study analyzing the following aspects of male and female roles in the books: (1) The visibility of males and females in book titles, illustrations, and as main characters; (2) Children's activities; (3) Men and women's occupations and their homemaking and recreational activities. The images of Chinese and American men and women, or boys and girls in children's books are also analyzed in the study. The study has revealed that (1) women and girls are under-represented in both Chinese and American children's books; (2) Chinese women and girls are more poorly represented than their American counterparts in both quantity and quality; (3) images of men and women are still stereotyped in both Chinese and American children's books without much change except for American men's participation in homemaking activities; (4) the image of Chinese children, especially of girls, is heavily stereotyped in the books; (5) the content of American children's books is much closer to reality and gender equality than that of Chinese children's books. Women's roles and the children's publishing industry in both societies are also discussed in the study for the purpose of analyzing and interpreting the findings of the study.
