Over the past century, career development centers across the nation have evolved from the vocational and placement centers of the 1920s towards an interdisciplinary operational model of today (Herr, 2013). The interdisciplinary model incorporates clinically certified practitioners (e.g., career counselors, social workers) with non-clinical career development to achieve organizational goals and metrics. These designations provide a different introduction, context, and points of understanding towards both career centers as organizations and the career development profession as a whole. This study explored the phenomenon of organizational socialization through a qualitative investigation of the experiences of 10 non-clinical career development practitioners. These practitioners held entry-level roles of employment in centralized career development centers across the Southeastern portion of the United States. Using a modified version of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen model of interpretative phenomenological analysis to ground the author and data analysis process (Moustakas, 1994), the study utilized questionnaires and an in-depth interview to answer the following question: how do non-clinical career development practitioners make sense of the organizational socialization experience? Based on the findings, the non-clinical career development practitioners make sense of their experiences through a self-generated process. The findings provide a contextual perspective on the experiences that can provide guidance and insight to managers and leaders of career development centers.
